Externships
CPVETS has an extern program for currently enrolled 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
CPVETS is a small emergency and critical care facility located in beautiful State College, PA. We offer companion animal and exotic care during after-hours and weekends for clients in a 60-mile radius. Externs work closely with our Chief Medical Officer and other associates to see a variety of cases throughout their time at CPVETS.
Only one extern is on rotation at any given time to allow for the most hands on experience, as well as plenty of opportunity for one on one mentoring. Students have access to digital radiography, ultrasound, modern surgery suite, and in-house Abaxis laboratory with iStat. Additionally, externs will learn how to prioritize both diagnostic and treatment options when faced with financial or other limitations.
CPVETS prides itself on client and patient-centered care, with open communication and empathy as core values. Externs will be encouraged to utilize strong communication skills to develop a rapport with both clients and coworkers in the sometimes stressful environment of an ER. Our team believes that providing supportive, caring mentorship is critical to helping young veterinarians grow into effective team leaders.
Students are invited to attend for one to four weeks, and are encouraged to stay for as long as possible to gain the most from this opportunity. Low and no cost housing options are available.
