    Services

We're pleased to offer the following services at CPVETS:

As a true emergency and critical care hospital we have at least one emergency veterinarian on the premises at all times. This provides your pet a medically supervised intensive care and monitoring service. You will not find this level of service anywhere else in central Pennsylvania.

    Anesthesia

Throughout any surgical procedures, or cases that requires anesthesia, we constantly monitor a pet’s condition. Our facility is equipped with an ECG, and equipment to monitor end tidal CO2, oxygen saturation, blood pressure and temperature. We also have the capability to mechanically ventilate a patient if necessary. Each anesthetized patient is also monitored by a highly trained veterinary technician in addition to the being overseen by the ever watchful eye of the doctor working the case.

    Diagnostic Laboratory

CPVETS houses the diagnostic tools that can literally save an animal’s life. Because we have our own diagnostic center, we receive immediate lab results – results that can often be crucial.

Testing available includes but is not limited to:

    • Complete blood counts, chemistry panels and electrolyte monitoring
    • Blood coagulation times, urinalysis and other cytologies
    • Blood gas evaluation, cortisol levels, ethylene glycol testing
    • A variety of tests for infectious disease

    Endoscopy

Endoscopy is performed with the patient under anesthesia. This is a minimally invasive procedure that allows our veterinarians to see into your pet’s body without performing a more invasive surgical procedure. At CPVETS, our equipment is typically used to examine the upper gastrointestinal tract, take biopsies or retrieve select objects that a pet shouldn’t have, but did, swallow!

    Imaging

    Digital Radiology:

Digital radiography has all but replaced the older method of taking x-rays by using film and a developer. Our digital images are ready immediately after they are taken and the images are more precise due to their marked increase in detail. Using this modality also allows us to easily send copies of the images home with owners or send them off to our referring veterinarians or specialists for interpretation.

    Ultrasound (Sonography):

This imaging modality uses sound waves to allow veterinarians to examine the inside of the body through the outside skin. At CPVETS we typically use our machines to perform a procedure known as FAST – Focused Abdominal Sonography for Trauma. This technique non-invasively reveals excess abdominal fluid, commonly found in trauma patients. This helps our doctors quickly evaluate the extent of injuries and develop the best treatment plan for a pet.

    Nursing Care/ICU

Our emergency team is highly skilled in assessing and treating pets that become ill or experience life-threatening emergencies. When your family veterinarian is unavailable, we are fully staffed and available nights, holidays, and 24 hours on the weekends. Our doctors and staff have chosen to focus their careers solely on emergency medicine so YOU can feel comfortable knowing that WE feel comfortable caring for your pet in their time of need.

    Pharmacy

CPVETS houses its own pharmacy that allows us to provide take home medications for our clients and their pets. We dispense enough medication to treat your pet’s condition until you can follow up with your primary care veterinarian.

    Soft Tissue Surgery

As an emergency center, we must be ready to perform surgery day or night, holidays and weekends. If your pet requires surgery, you can feel confident in our surgeons’ skill and experience. Our surgery suite is up to date and fully equipped for whatever cases come our way.

    Transfusion Medicine

When needed, we can administer blood products, such as whole blood, fresh frozen plasma, and packed red blood cells to your pet. To ensure compatibility between donors and recipients and to reduce reactions, we perform blood typing and cross matching on any pet requiring a transfusion.
